Mexico: The Cost of Unsafe Roads

According to data from the National Institute of Statistics, Geography and Information (INEGI), there were 430,000 traffic accidents in Mexico in 2009, of which 6000 were fatal, CNN Expansion reports. The total cost of these accidents, including material damages, medical costs and administrative costs, represents 1.3% of Mexico’s GDP. One expert recommends methods to reduce traffic accidents and their associated costs in Mexico. Most road accidents are avoidable, such as driving while tired, driving while intoxicated and driving at high speeds. The infrastructure in Mexico also lends itself to high accident rates, such as poor signage and safety measures. Overall, it is recommended that Mexico improve its infrastructure and driver education to lower accident rates. Read Article
