Guayaquil, Ecuador: Protests Erupt in the Center

According to ElComercio.com today, at mid-day, Wednesday July 6th, about 50 protesters marched through different sections of Guayaquil’s center. A protest that began at the Palace of Justice consisted of several former employees of Ecuador’s National Beer Company. The former employees were asking authorities to expedite a judicial case involving the company so that they could receive their benefits amounting to a reported $90 million. It was joined by residents from a squatter settlement, City of God, in the northwest of Guayaquil who were dressed in white shirts, asking for the legalization of their lands. A third protest joined, led by the Pachacutik movement, consisting of retired merchant navy peoples who complained that their pensions were being paid in Sucres. El Comercio reports that the protest ended at government headquarters and was closely watched by the national police.Read Article
