Galapagos Islands: a natural history primer

theguardian.com reported that in 1929, Friedrich Ritter abandoned his wife and Berlin dental practice and eloped with his patient and lover, a married teacher named Dore Strauch, to Floreana in the Galápagos Islands, 1,000km west of Ecuador. The couple became minor celebrities, feted in the international press for their rugged individualism as they carved out a new life in this harsh and remote place. Ritter saw himself as a Nietzschean superman, rising above the pygmies of Weimar “civilisation” by sheer force of will. According to Judith Schalansky’s 2010 book Atlas of Remote Islands, he believed he could build a new map of the human brain. Read Article
