Former Governor of Tamaulipas, Mexico Accused of Accepting Bribes from Drug Traffickers

El Universal reports that Tomás Yarrington, the former governor of Tamaulipas, has been accused of receiving and accepting millions of dollars of bribes from drug trafficking organizations. According to U.S. federal prosecutors, he then invested the money in real estate in Texas, thus making his actions a form of money-laundering. Formal charges have not yet been filed, although prosecutors have filed two requests to confiscate Yarrington’s property. U.S. investigators claim there is sufficient proof that Yarrington has worked with Osiel Cárdenas Guillén, a former leader of the Gulf Cartel. Antonio Peña Argüelles, who has been accused of money laundering in the United States, has testified about a link between leaders of the Gulf Cartel, Los Zetas, and politicians in Tamaulipas, further legitimizing accusations concerning Yarrington. Other witnesses with evidence against Yarrington have also come forward. Read Article
