On January 25, 2013, G1 reported that city councilmen in Natal, the capital of Rio Grande do Norte, spoke about a recent salary increase among local government officials that made their salary the highest among any city official in any city capital in Brazil.  This month those councilmen will be paid R$17,000 (about $8,500).  Politicians including Amanda Gurgel (PSTU) commented that the salary was among the reasons they considered running for office.  She also criticized the measure, however, saying it was passed during an inappropriate time.  Eleika Bezerra (PSDC), councilwoman and local professor, vows to donate her salary to worthy causes in Natal.  Read Article
