Chile Venezuela account for 61% or arms imports in South America 2007-2011

The Americas experienced a 61% increase in arms imports between 2007-2011, while world trade in conventional weapons rose by 24% during the same period, according to a report released today by the International Institute Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). In South America, Chile and Venezuela accounted for 61% of imports in the region and in the latter case, increased by 555% in the last five years, rising from number 46 to number 15 in the list of world importers.
