Callao, Peru: Central Market, Death Trap in Event of Earthquake

ElComercio.pe reports that the central market in Callao does not have a legal operating license or safety certificate. Therefore, 10,000 people are exposed daily to a serious risk in event of an earthquake, stated the council of Civil Defense. The market has a history in kidnappings, stabling and arrests. In 1940 there was an earthquake that caused a tsunami devastating the city of Callao. Recently, El Comercio reports that there was an intension to close the market due to serious risk of an earthquake. However, city officials did not set a date. Callao’s central market is the oldest and most neglected in Peru. Until 2004 is was owned by the Provincial Municipality of Callao, when the mayor Alex Kouri decided to sell the market to its 855 dealers.Read Article
