Brazilian Workers’ Party to Hold Dinner to Raise Money for Mensalão Fines

On January 17, 2013, R7 reported that a group of bosses within the Workers’ Party (PT) is promoting a dinner to be held in Brasília on Thursday night to raise money to cover the fines for those convicted in the Mensalão scandal.  Several prominent PT members such as José Genoino, Delúbio Soares and José Dirceu were convicted and sentenced to prison time and fines last year for their respective roles.  Out of the 170 spots, 110 have already been sold as of yesterday at noon.  The idea has garnered mixed results within the PT, with some supporting the idea of helping out those wrongly convicted and others rejecting on the grounds that the penal system is unjust.  Read Article
