On January 8, 2013, G1 (Globo) reported that authorities seized 2,736 illegal firearms in the Brazilian state of Paraíba in 2012, an increase of 25.6% from 2011.  According to Claudio Lima, Secretary of the State’s Public Security Ministry, the number of police operations was decisive in advancing arms control throughout the state.  “By taking firearms from the hands of criminals, we reduced the number of violent deaths, which is our principal objective,” he said.  Police received rewards ranging from R$300 to R$1,500 for every firearm collected.  The number of murders in the state also fell 8.21% in 2012 from the previous year.  Read Article
