Abaetetuba Brazil: outbreak of Chagas Disease, possible food borne from Açaí fruit

An outbreak of Chagas disease reaches the town of Abaetetuba within Para More than 24 cases were reported in the region. One person died.

The epidemic could have started because of consumption of contaminated açaí. The mosquito transmits the disease are attracted by the fruit typical of the region. The insect feces eliminates the fruit and, if consumed without proper hygiene, may cause contamination. Read Article
