Quito, Ecuador: Alarming Number of Minors Work on Streets as Vendors

Extra.ec reports a study by the Catholic University of Quito found that out of 5,643 street vendors, 1,093 are younger than 17 years old. Also, the study found that 64.4% of the vendors are men and 35.6% are women. The basis of the study was to find out the working conditions of the traders. The Metropolitan Agency of Economic Promotions, Conquito is reportedly using the study to help these vendors establish new marketing ideas that could lead to economic growth and job stability. The project labeled “Self-Worth Commerce” will establish training sessions for these vendors. However, the director of the program says the 1,093 minors will not be included since Child Labor Codes state minors cannot work. These minors will undergo help creating social plans and continue educational studies say program officials.Read Article
