Only 11% of third grade students in Chile achieved a basic level in English in a recent assessment by the Ministry of Education

Conducted for the first time last October, the evaluation showed that 89% of students couldn’t understand everyday phrases and short, simple texts. Acknowledging the poor results, Education Minister Joaquín Lavín admitted that it was not a surprise, as “we know our reality and we knew our weaknesses, but we must be clear that what is not measured does not improve.” A national plan to improve levels of English will be introduced in the coming weeks.
