Brazil: Attorney General Confirms Lula Accusation for the First Time

On January 30, 2013, O Estado de São Paulo reported that Roberto Gurgel, currently Brazil’s Attorney General, has announced that he will order a formal accusation against ex-President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for his alleged role in the Mensalão scandal.  After hearing depositions from Marcos Valério Fernandes de Souza, businessman and PT supporter concluded to be the pivot of the entire case, Gurgel announced that he will investigate the extent of Lula’s immunity from the charges, now that he is no longer in power.  Fernandes de Sousa confirmed that Lula knew about the scandal, but Lula was not among the defendants once the case was opened.  Read Article
