Ecuador: President Correa Believes it is Unnecessary for Referendum to Eliminate Term Limits

infobae.com/AFP reported the President of Ecuador found it “unnecessary” to a referendum by the reform on the clauses that limit the possibility of staying in power. The decision is in the hands of the Constitutional Court. The President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, referred today to the project of constitutional reform that could enable the indefinite re-election of the President and said that not necessary a referendum about this issue. Correa, in office since 2007, has not yet confirmed if he will go or not for a fourth mandate in 2017, but it is its political formation, the author of the project for indefinite reelection that was sent to Congress a few weeks ago. Unlike what raised several forces opposition with regard to that is an issue that must go through a consultation before being approved, the President said on Friday that, as is an “simple constitutional amendment” and not a reform of the State, was not required.

President Correa Staed “Personally, would like to retire in 2017 and my candidacy would be a last resort. “But we also fully understand the responsibility we have on our shoulders; prevent the past from disaster”, said.

Other amendments raised seek reduced from 35 to 30 years the minimum age to be President, declared as “public service” communication and empower the armed forces to engage in internal security tasks. Read Article
