42% Peruvian Children Pick Coca Leafs or Exploited in Cities

  • According to Hoy.com.ec more than 3 million Peruvian children work in hazardous conditions harvesting coca leafs or as street venders.
  • Most hazardous child labor occurs in the valley of the Apurimac and Ene rivers where 90% of children harvest coca leafs reports El Comercio.
  • Harvesters are between 6 and 17, mostly women and work for about 36 cents per kilo of bagged leafs.
  • Work in the coca harvest, children can earn $36 dollars a day. Working in the transportation of processed coca, earnings are $100 to $200 dollars.
  • Regional authorities signed a commitment to eliminate child labor in Piura on June 12th, where about 60,000 children under 14 years of age work in hazardous conditions.
  • Peruvian Labor Minister says the government is auditing companies suspected of employing underage children
