WHO report states Chile leads Latin America in alcohol consumption

satiagotimes.cl reported experts blame drinking culture and advertising as WHO report says Chile leads Latin America in alcohol consumption — region second only to Europe globally. A new report reveals that Chile has surpassed its Latin American neighbors in alcohol consumption for the first time, an everyday Chilean guzzles three liters of alcohol above the world average each year.

The Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health 2014, commissioned by the World Health Organisation (WHO), found that Chileans above the age of 15 drink 9.6 liters of pure alcohol per capita annually — above both the regional average of 8.4 liters and the world average of 6.2 liters.Previous polls showed the Chilean average level with Brazil and behind Argentina, however WHO’s research shows an increase in drinking in Chile over the last 10 years, including a jump from from 8.8 liters in 2011 to the current average.
