Violence Against Seniors Rises 30.5% in Fortaleza, Brazil, in 2012

On March 18, 2013, O Povo reported that a study done in Fortaleza, the capital of the state of Ceará, registered some 949 attacks against senior citizens in the city. The number marks a 30.5% rise from 2011. Most of the cases reported, however, are settled out of court, according to the report. Between 2006 and 2012, the national Dial 1-0-0 campaign registered close to 4,300 cases of elderly abuse in Fortaleza, and 15% of those were cases of financial exploitation. The government is exploring a campaign to fight violence against the elderly, according to the federal prosecutor’s office.  Read Article
