Venezuela Destroys 12 Clandestine Airstrips near Colombian Border, Seizes 1.8 Tons of Drugs

On May 16, 2013, Reuters reported that the Venezuelan military destroyed 12 airstrips used by drug traffickers in the state of Apure, near the Colombian Border, in addition to seizing 1.8 tons of drugs in 2013. Wilmer Barrientos, the head of the Strategic Operational Command of Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB), said the destruction of the airstrips and the drug seizures were part of Operation Boquete. The military chief said that in 2013 they have seized 9 aircraft and arrested 68 people, and they expect to destroy 44 more airstrips to combat drug trafficking in the country this year. Operation Boquete began in 2007 and has resulted in the arrest of 253 people and the seizure of 53 aircraft. Read Article
