Uruguayans in Argentine prisons for drug trafficking

Recent data provided by the Consulate in Buenos Aires and published yesterday in El País shows that of the estimated 309 Uruguayan prisoners and 500 defendants being held in Argentina, 79% of them are in prison for drug trafficking, per espanol.upi.com. Most of these traffickers are women between the ages of 18 and 35 and say they agree to traffic drugs because they have no other options. Someone offers them money for a 2 day trip to Argentina and all they have to do is hide drugs in their body or their suitcase. Many defendants are arrested during their first trip and have no prior criminal record.
