Uruguay legalizes abortion

The Senate approved the legalization of abortion by 17 votes in favor and 14 against. Allow abortion on demand up to 12 weeks of gestation.

On Sept. 25 the Chamber of Deputies had approved an abortion bill with 50 votes for and 49 against. The law passed today were 17 votes of the senators of the Broad Front and the nationalist Jorge Saravia

President Jose Mujica can veto the bill, but has already announced that he will not. The text of 15 articles, requires the enactment of the Executive and subsequent regulations, so it does not enter into force immediately. In the previous legislature passed an abortion law similar, but the then President Vázquez vetoed the article referring to abortion. Read Article
