Travel to Quito Ecuador and environs

NEWS-GAZETTE.COM / LAWSON LAU / While in bed on our first night, however, we had an unscheduled experience. We awoke when we felt the earth move: the ever so brief but distinct tremor of an earthquake. We were on the ninth floor of the Best Western hotel.

At 9,000 feet above sea level, Quito is the highest capital city in the world. It is surrounded by a ring of volcanoes, mainly extinct. Most impressive is the snow-capped Cotopaxi, which peaks at 19,347 feet.
