State of Bahia, Brazil, Collects 2nd Highest Gun Count in National Campaign

On April 6, 2013, A Tarde reported that the state of Bahia recorded the second-highest number of guns turned over to authorities out of Brazil’s 26 states, with only São Paulo collecting more. The collection is part of a national disarmament campaign. Bahia collected 1,380 illegal firearms between the beginning of this year and the first week of April. Public safety expert Theodomiro Dias Neto believes that it is a good sign towards a lowering of violence in the country: “There is an immediate relationship between guns and homicide. Collecting guns has been a principal factor in reducing gun violence and homicides in São Paulo,” he said.  Read Article
