Santa Cruz, Bolivia: Child Forced by Grandfather into Stealing

On July 24, 2013 El Mundo Noticias reported that market sellers in Santa Cruz found a 9-year-old girl shoplifting items from a merchant stall. According to one of the market sellers, this was not the first instance of the girl attempting to steal from them. Police arrived at the scene after receiving a call by the merchants, who requested that the police question the girl to determine whether she had been ordered to steal by someone. In her statement to the police, the girl admitted that her grandfather forced her to steal and threatened her if she did not do it. Police later apprehended the girl’s grandfather for questioning.
