Two Rural Workers Killed in Attempt to Occupy Peruvian Airport

According to ElComercio.com on Friday June 24th two people were killed and 12 injured when rural workers tried forcefully to occupy the airport in Juliaca, located in southern Peru on the Bolivian border. The occupation was lead by anti-mining protesters that were eventually repelled by the Peruvian police says a hospital source. Officials say that more than a thousand protesters met about 100 riot police at the airport were a violent clash ensued. Airport officials report that flights had to be canceled due to the attempted occupation and the continuing mining protests. A group of strikers remains in the vicinity of the airport, report police. Officials also say that the Peruvian-Bolivia border entrance is still blocked. The leader of the protesters, Walter Aduviri, is continuing discussions with government authorities in Lima.Read Article
