Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil: Police Operation to Combat Drug Trafficking in Prisons

Terra reported on May 31, 2013 that the Civil Police of Rio Grande do Norte ended “Operation Elefante Branco” (White Elephant) after arresting 40 suspects accused of supplying drugs from Ceará to Rio Grande do Norte. Police discovered that the gang conducted all purchases, sales, and distributions of the drugs between inmates from within prisons in the area. The drugs were supplied from Paraguay. The investigation lasted about six months in which police made the correlation between the number of homicides and robberies in the region being closely related to drug trafficking activity.
