Rio de Janeiro Brazil: Tourist stabbed to death in center of Copacabana beach

AFP/eluniverso.com reported a tourist from Argentina was stabbed to death in an assault on Wednesday on the beach at Copacabana, a postcard of the city and site of several competitions of the Olympic Games in August.

“Argentina A tourist was wounded by robbers. He was rescued and taken to the Miguel Couto hospital where he died,” police said email to AFP.

The two assailants were arrested and identified.

The incident occurred in the heart of Copacabana, which will receive beach volleyball competitions and events open water swimming at the first Olympics in South America.

According to the news site Globo, the victim was 24 and was with two friends on the beach when the men approached him asking for cigarettes. When trying to steal, young ran but one of them was hit and stabbed on the waterfront.
