Researcher uses algorithm with Google Maps to monitor drug cartel activity

Mexican researcher Viridiana Rios developed an algorithm that uses Google maps to locate the activity, mobility and modus operandi of the drug cartels. his project, developed at the Center for US-Mexico Studies at the University of California in San Diego and in the Trans-Border Institute at the University of San Diego, seeks to identify strategies, areas of operation and the way in which drug traffickers have evolved their activities in the last two decades. This algorithm allows for massive searches in Google’s news section on criminal groups that include information on locations and dates of operation of these criminal groups. Read Article
