Peru: Tourist from U.S. perishes in fall during hike of Inca Trail

Rapid City Journal – They couldn’t have known it, but a powerful thunderstorm the night before had loosened the ground beneath the hiking boots of Molly Goin and Whitney Stevens of Rapid City as they embarked on the third day of a five-day trek from Mollepata, Peru, to the historic Incan city of Machu Picchu.

Three hours into the hike on March 1, as the women traversed a section of trail more than 100 feet above the engorged Urubamba River, the destabilized dirt beneath Stevens gave way. Goin, trailing Stevens by three or four feet on the trail, stood unscathed yet helpless as she watched her best friend disappear from the Andean mountainside and into the raging river.

Stevens died somewhere between the towns of Chaullay and Santa Teresa, Peru, a little more than 125 miles from the former Incan empire capital of Cusco. Read Article
