Peru: Students from UK safe after fire breaks out near Machu Picchu

An Exeter-based school expedition tour operator have spoken about an eventful trip which saw pupils trekking near a fire broke out on a historic mountain in Peru.

The School Travel Consultancy has hit the headlines after pupils from a school in Ormskirk, Lancashire, were among tourists who were evacuated from Machu Picchu after a fire ripped through the mountain.

The company says the pupils were not in immediate danger because there were 10 miles from the blaze. An expedition leader led them to safety and they did not have to change route on the trail.
