Peru – Cusco area looking at opening up four new roads to Machu Picchu

peruthisweek.com reported that the Cusco-area private sector is considering the possibility of rehabilitating now-unused paths into Machu Picchu in order to allow tourists to take a more flexible— as well as more personalized— approach to the site.

According to Andina news agency, Roger Valencia of the Cusco Chamber of Tourism announced that four new roads could be opened. Valencia told Andina that one of the paths that is being considered for rehabilitation is the path that American archaeologist and adventurer Hiram Bingham took up the mountain when he re-discovered Machu Picchu in 1911.
