Pará, Brazil: “Operation Ibira” to Combat Illegal Activity on Indian Reservation

Globo reported on May 21, 2013, that the Federal Police initiated “Operation Ibira” to combat illegal log companies illicitly removing and selling timber logs from the indigenous area of Alto Rio Guama, Pará. This Indian Reservation is considered the most threatened in the Amazon and has had a history of environmental and land disputes between loggers and Indians since the 70’s. The Federal Police estimate the environmental damage to cost more than US$ 1,240 billion. Investigations of this criminal activity began in 2012.Read Article
