Online fraud tops the list of bank’s fraud in Costa Rica

At least 98 out of the 166 complaints for fraud in this year’s first semester come from online banking deductions in credit cards, chequings and savings accounts, La Nacion reports. According to statistics from the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ), this offense is followed by counterfeit cards, with 54 complaints, alteration or “twin” checks and the fraudulent application of plastics, with five cases each, the rest of the claims were made by misrepresentation. Moreover, 76% of all claims where made in the San Jose Province. For Osvaldo Henderson, the prosecutor in charge of these crimes, this increase is due to greater sophistication of criminals, who react to the warnings made by banks to their customers. Read Article
