Mexico: Oaxaca Faces 8000-Unit Blood Deficit Yearly

June 14 is World Blood Donor Day, but Oaxaca faces a donation deficit each year, according to Noticias Net. Each year, the public and private health sectors in the state receive 30,000 units of blood, but 38,000 are needed to meet international standards. This June 14, the State Center for Blood Transfusions is promoting the importance of blood donation as each year more units are needed. The Center says the primary reason that Oaxacans do not donate is due to a fear of needles and contamination. Only three percent of all blood units in Oaxaca are donated by volunteers. Read Article
