Mexico: Criminal Organizations Prey on Minors through Internet

Underaged users of the Internet and social networks can fall victim to pedophiles, human traffickers and child pornographers, who find the potential anonymity of social networking very attractive, Proceso reports. According to data from the Alliance for Internet Security (ASI), 32.8 million users between the ages of six and 11 used the Internet in some form last year. According to an ASI survey of 10,000 children in primary and secondary school, 44.2% admitted to meeting someone in person that they had met online, 12% talked about sex on the Internet with someone they didn’t know, and 11.6% said they had fallen in love with someone they met online. The Mexican government is advising parents to talk with their children about the dangers of the Internet and to give guidance on Internet safety to children. Read Article
