Manaus, Brazil: 16 Establishments Closed for Sexual Exploitation and Drug Trafficking Activity

On August 2, 2013, Globo reported that the Federal Police closed sixteen establishments in Manaus used for sexual exploitation of minors, prostitution, and drug trafficking. Operation “Insurance Center” arrested 20 foreigners from Peru, Venezuela, and Colombia who were living in Brazil illegally. During the operation, police discovered a drug refining laboratory as well as families living in hostels. Police report the investigation of such criminal activity in the city lasted three months before the operation could be conducted. The operation included the work of more than 30 agencies.
