Malecón 2000 in Guayaquil Ecuador, 1.6 million visitors a month

elcomercio.com reported after 14 years of remodeling and expansion, within a programme of urban regeneration, the boardwalk in avenida Simon Bolivar has become the main tourist reference and recreation of the city icon. According to the Malecón 2000 Foundation, responsible for the Administration and maintenance of this recreational park in Guayaquil, is visited monthly by 1 600 000 people. The work of regeneration marked a before and an after the levee since October 1999 when it opened its first stage. Even before the start of renovation works, it was a site abandoned in some sectors and dangerous. “Six or seven in the evening was impossible to walk alone. The only slightly more secure part was the La Rotonda Chamber, facing the Avenue nine of October. The rest was dark.
