Local Minister Faces Corruption Charges in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil

On January 9, 2013, Campo Grande News reported that a minister of the cabinet of Mayor Alcides Bernal (PP) faces charges for accepting bribes to release reserves from an oil refinery without assessing taxes or declaring the oil to be in the market.  Gustavo Freire faces charges of participating in a massive kickback scheme in which local attendants received some $200 per truck for letting the trucks go without assessing taxes.  If convicted, he could lose his job within the local administration, be barred from serving in public office, and be ordered to pay civil charges and court costs.   Read Article
