LGBT Assault Cases in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Under Local Police Jurisdiction

On April 4, 2013, Agência Brasil reported that homophobia-related cases in Rio de Janeiro now fall under the jurisdiction of the local police. The local Coordination Office for the Protection of Sexual Diversity (CEDS) will now pass all of its information to the Rio de Janeiro Civil Police, in an effort to strengthen public policy directives aimed at protecting the LGBT community. Rio de Janeiro remains a pioneer city in the fight to protect the rights of its LGBT citizens. Since the passing of a 2008 law, public authorities can be called to any situation where a citizen feels discriminated against because of his/her sexual orientation.  Read Article
