Investigation Begins in Brazil Regarding Lula’s Role in Mensalão Scandal

On April 12, 2013, O Estado de São Paulo reported that Luíz Inácio Lula da Silva, former President of Brazil, will be the subject of a new investigation by the federal Attorney General’s office regarding his role in the mensalão scandal. Authorities have 30 days to investigate accusations made by Marcos Valério, businessman and ringleader of the scandal, of Lula knowing about bribes and his party making illicit loans to a Portuguese telecommunications company. The mensalão case was decided in December of 2012, where over 20 people were sent to prison for paying bribes to politicians to vote for various bills.  Read Article
