Hospital in Cuiabá, Brazil, to be Investigated for Diversion of Funds

On March 31, 2013, 24 Horas News reported that a hospital in Cuiabá, in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, has turned in documents necessary to investigate its purchase of medications necessary to its operations.  According to Kamil Hussein Fares (PDT), Municipal Health Secretary, the fraud involved with the purchases dates back many years, and those involved with the scandal have made a lot of money from the deals.  Suspicion was raised when there emerged a shortage of drugs at various clinics throughout Cuiabá.  Medications purchased for the Municipal First Response Hospital of Cuiabá (HPSMC) were particularly expensive and suggested a diversion of funds.  Secretary Fares promised punishment for those involved.  Read Article
