Guayaquil Ecuador: A real historical piece of culture at Radio Cristal 870AM

Posted on January 15, 2014 • Filed under: Culture, Ecuador

from reporter montubio: Ecuador has a long history of radio broadcasting. One of my favorite older stations is “Radio Cristal” 870 AM… Known as La voz del Pueblo. The station began operations in 1957 and is still going strong. There are a couple of unique aspects of this broadcaster. Many well known musical artists have been presented from the station since 57′. The station broadcasts live and has a large auditorium where listeners can visit the shows presented. The station is also known to offer services for very low prices to public to make announcements. On the street level of the station one can walk up and write out an advertisement, pay the fee, and the station will broadcast the announcement. Many people have used this service to report something or someone missing.

Many years ago before cellphones I was out and about and conducting an interview with a well known historian. My family became alarmed and I finally arrived at home safe and they all told me the were about ready to go to Radio Cristal and pay for an announcement “gringo perdido por favor llama la casa” – Lost Gringo please call home.
