Ex-Mayor Arrested on Corruption Charges in Paraná, Brazil

On January 11, 2013, Gazeta do Povo reported that Paulo Furiati, ex-mayor of the city of Lapa, in the state of Paraná, was arrested by authorities for his role in a scheme involving bidding procedures in the area of education.  The scandal encompassed Paraná, as well as the states of Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina and the Federal District.  The investigation was triggered by the state’s Organized Crime Repression Unit (Gaeco).  Gaeco’s director, Leonor Batisti, said that it is common for owners of for-profit educational institutions to entice city governments, offering services in return for influence and favorable treatment.  Read Article
