Ecuador to reduce military posts 47% by 2017, no impact on border with Colombia

telegrafo.com reported Ecuador announced there will be a 47% reduction of its military posts by the year 2017. However, there will remain military units along the border shared with Colombia. Currently, there are 11,000 troops assigned to the border territory.

The Defennse Minister stated that some military installations will be relocated. The goal for these changes is to optimize Ecuador’s resources.its will remain along the troubled border with Colombia where there are some 11,000 soldiers.

In April of 2014, President Correa stated he believe there would be an 18% cut in military personnel. Current numbers at about 42,000 would be reduced to 34,500 troops. President Correa believes that the decision to reduce is based on the little chance of a conventional war. Read Article
