Ecuador: Petition filed requesting to decriminalize abortion

Many Ecuadorean women have been forced to carry pregnancies that are the product of rape.

telesurtv.net reported the Ecuadorian National Assembly received on Thursday a petition asking it to decriminalize abortion in the country.

The Bar Association in Quito presented a text in which they ask the assembly to analyze the decriminalization of abortion in cases of rape, incest and when a fetus has a fatal disability.

Ecuadorean law currently provides for the possibility of abortion only in cases where it’s deemed necessary to avoid danger to the life or health of a pregnant woman, and when the pregnancy is the result of rape of a woman with mental disabilities. Read Article
