Ecuador: Large Scale Mining Operation to begin in 2017, Owned by Chinese

WSJ.com/Mercedes Alvaro reported Ecuador expects its first large-scale mining operation to start within three years as a Chinese-owned copper project moves forward, a high-level government official said. The Minister of Non-Renewable Natural Resources, Pedro Merizalde, said that the Mirador project, owned by Chinese mining company Ecuacorriente is expected to start production in 2017. “Works are advancing. The company is importing the necessary machinery for the construction of production facilities. Production at the mine is forecast to begin in 2017,” Mr. Merizalde said. It has been estimated that Mirador, located in the Zamora Chinchipe province, has about 2.9 million tons of copper. Read Article
