Ecuador in process of constructing 8 hydroelectric dams

By securing sovereignty over its energy sources, Ecuador is looking to export and promote regional integration. As part of a larger policy of ensuring energy sovereignty and promoting regional integration, Ecuador is in the process of building 8 hydroelectric dams that are projected to be finished by 2016 with a US $5 billion investment. Currently, an estimated 97 percent of Ecuadorans have accesss to electricity, and with these dams Ecuador will produce an energy surplus.

Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Dr. Esteban Albornoz Vintimilla said that upon the dams’ completion Ecuador would operate with a 2,800 megawatt capacity, which is double the current amount. Read Article
