Ecuador: El Universo Refuse Judges’ Sentence, Correa: Fines Go Toward Yasuni-ITT Park

The three directors of El Universo and the columnist were sentenced to three years in prison and fines of $30 million and $10 million for El Universo Company. Leon Roldos, a lawyer for the directors, says the ruling is a human rights violation and Correa is committing ‘judicial brutality.’ President Correa’s attorney, Alembert Vera announced on Thursday, July 21st, the fines leveed on El Universo would not benefit Correa economically. Instead the fines will serve as a donation to the Yasuni-ITT National Park in an effort to ‘end a false and hurtful campaign saying the case is one of persecution against the media and is fueled by an economic objective.’Read Article
