Ecuador: 17 articles for amendment of constitution legal according to head of assembly

telesurtv.net reported since June, Ecuador has been in a process of revision of constitutional amendments.

In an effort to extend constitutional rights of Ecuadorian citizens, since June the ruling PAIS Alliance has been pushing for reforms to the constitution.

On June 26, the party submitted a proposal to amend 17 articles in the 2008 Constitution, 16 of which are currently being debated in the National Assembly.

“The 17 articles that have been presented today have been analyzed and determined to be legal, constitutional, and judicially upheld so that they may lead to amendments,” said Gabriela Rivadeneira, President of the National Assembly upon receiving the amendments for review. “This is because none of the 17 articles change the structure of the state. Therefore we hope that the reform package will be seen just in that way.” The Constitutional Court determined that the amendments do not require a referendum, as they do not change the structure of the state, and the signatures of 5 percent of the population would be required for the referendum to occur.
