Ecuador: 1 Kilo of Heroin Found in Shipment of Bread

From La Tarde on June 13, 2013- According to the Chief Narcotics officer of the Azuay province, the practice of trafficking drugs through the mail has become more commonplace. One of the latest incidents resulted in the seizure of 1,012 grams of heroin hidden amongst various breads. The packaged was heading to Portchester, United States and the heroin was valued at $65,000 USD. Julio Dávila, anti-narcotics police chief, said that many times the people dropping off the packages use false identification which results in few arrests being made. In response, operations have increased especially on packages heading out of the country or towards Guayaquil. So far this year only two people have been arrested for attempting to mail drugs.
