Cusco Peru Travel Alert: four robberies against foreign tourists in two months

July 25, 2012 – Tourist from the U.S. was robbed of an Ipod stolen by a taxi driver from the tourist’s luggage.

Larepublica.pe reported that there is growing insecurity at the Alejandro Velasco Astete airport in Cusco, Peru. In the last two months there have been four reported cases of aggravated robbery against foreign tourists visiting Cusco and Machu Picchu.

The latest offense involved a taxi driver picking up a passenger at the airport. Upon arrival at the North American’s hotel, the victim found his Ipod missing after the taxi driver unloaded the passengers bags. A review of the security camera at the hotel identified the driver. A search of the driver’s home by Tourist Police found the Ipod hidden under a mattress. The thief was an approved driver of a taxi service working at the airport. Read Article
